Description

Introduction that I wrote about Sammus in 2018: Sammus is an emcee & producer from New York. My first introduction to Sammus was two years ago, when I watched the music video for “1080p”. Fueled by raw, honest emotion, she spits a relatable story about struggling to navigate through life while dealing with depression & it’s has an important message about getting help when you need it. She’s a superb storyteller whose bars are jam-packed with verbal imagery, clever wordplay, geeky references, & sometimes servin’ humor; she doesn’t shy away from her deepest emotions & getting personal; she has a charismatic, potent flow; & she often has a powerful message. Her beats are as diverse & dope as she is, too; hip hop is the foundation, but weaves in other elements of music from jazz, electronic, & rock, to video game samples. Her subject matter touches topics of cultural assumptions, ditching people who make you feel insignificant, internet trolls, childhood good times, feminism, sexual assault, anxiety, Black womanhood, video games & cartoons, & more. So, her journey? She began making beats during her high school years, under the alias DJ Eno, but eventually became Sammus (name inspired by Samus, one of the first playable women characters in video games). She self-released her debut EP, titled Fly Nerd, in 2010, & has since released 9 additional projects (also with NuBlack Music Group). She gained a huge nerdcore following after she released the Another M album, which was inspired by the Metroid gaming series from the 80’s, that tells the story of an intergalactic bounty hunter. Her most recent album, Pieces in Space, was released in 2016 via the Don Giovanni label, & I LOVE it. Outside of her prowess as a lyricist & beatmaker, another standout to her strong stage presence is the massive arm cannon she wears. Umm, can she get anymore badass?! Well, there will be a Sammus documentary, called Enongo (her real name)! OK, I talked your eyes off… get familiar with @sammusmusic!

FYI: Sammus has been making a lot of undercover moves since I last wrote about her in 2018. She is now Dr. Enongo, she’s working on new music (+ album), & she’s one of the womxn behind The Keepers who are creating an extensive archive for womxn in hip hop.
